When the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, Ukraine became independent. The independence of Ukraine and Belarus was recognised in the Belovezha accords of 1991, and the borders were recognised as they were with Crimea in Ukraine.

In the Budapest memorandum in 1994, Russia, US and UK recognised the borders of Ukraine and promised to protect Ukraine’s integrity as Ukraine returned their nuclear weapons inherited from the Soviet Union to Russia.
